TSH aero Flies to Galveston Texas

Galveston is a coastal city located on Texas’ Galveston Island (a barrier island). The melodious name of the city came from the Spanish explorer Jose de Evia who named the city after the Count of Galvez, Bernardo de Galvez y Madrid. The Port of Galveston was established in 1825, by the Congress of Mexico, after they defeated the Spanish government. During the Texas Revolution the city served as the main port for the Texas Navy. Galveston was also the capital of the Republic of Texas. The Gulf of Mexico sits east and south of the city, while West Bay is on the west and Galveston Bay on the north. A deepwater channel connects Galveston’s harbor with the Gulf and the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway. Your private air charter flight to Galveston Island can be arranged by TSH aero.

There are six historic districts, with over 60 structures listed in the National Register of Historic Places, which represent architectural significance. Attractions to see include Moody Gardens Botanical Park, the Lone Star Flight Museum, the Ocean Star Offshore Drilling Rig & Museum, and a downtown neighborhood of historic buildings known as The Strand. Being an island, there are also a number of miles of beaches. There are festivals throughout the year including Mardi Gras, Jazz & Blues and a Christmas festival called Dickens on the Strand. The Galveston Symphony Orchestra was formed in 1979. The Galveston Ballet is a pre-professional ballet company and academy, that perform one full length classical ballet each spring and one mixed repertory program in the fall. Pick a festival and let TSH aero get you there in comfort aboard a private jet.

The climate is humid subtropical. Winds from the south and southeast pull heat from the Mexican deserts and moisture from the Gulf of Mexico. Summer highs hover near 90 degrees F (32 C), but the humidity of the area drives the heat index even higher. The winter temperatures are mild with January highs about 60 degrees F (15 C) and lows near 40 degrees F (5 C). Snow is rare but possible. No worries about the weather interfering with your private charter flight plans through TSH aero.

A Neiman Marcus Christmas

Another holiday season is almost upon us. The stores have already started their Thanksgiving and Christmas displays around the Halloween aisle. Think back over the last 5 years and try to remember what it was that you received as a gift on Christmas morning. The usual guy gifts might have included a new wallet, a shirt and tie, the newest after shave and cologne, or even the dreaded socks and underwear that are purchased when no one has a clue as to what to buy. You gals might have received a fragrance set including perfume, powder, lotion and shower gel. You might have gotten a hat, scarf, and gloves that don’t even come close to matching any coat you own. A Christmas cactus or a bouquet or red roses might have found its way under the tree. Or, you might have received something that he wanted and was afraid he would not get; so he bought it for you, knowing you would give it to him. Does any this sound familiar?

On October 6, Neiman Marcus Group Inc. mailed out the annual Christmas Book catalog to one million customers. If you did not receive one, don’t let it stop you from viewing it on-line. Each year the company features over-the-top ‘fantasy’ gifts. For example, in 2004, for $10 million you could have gotten a Zeppelin. In 2005, you could have bought a 4-seater Skycar. It was a steal at $3.5 million. From the 2008 catalog, you could have purchased a Jack Nicklaus designed golf course for a cool $1 million. Are you getting into the swing of this?

The highest price fantasy item in the 2009 catalog is a ‘his and hers’ two-seater ICON A5 amphibious Light Sport Aircraft (LSA) and it comes with pilot training for two and a custom made trailer. ICON’s sold from the Christmas Book will have exclusive Neiman Marcus exterior and interior luxury upgrades. The price of this package deal is $250,000. Since it is a ‘his and hers’ that will leave each of you only paying $125,000.00 for a gift you will never forget.

The Seclusion of Whidbey Island

Whidbey Island is located in Island County, Washington, in the United States. It is one of 9 islands in Island County. The physical location of Whidbey is 30 miles (48 km) north of Seattle. Whidbey forms the north boundary of Puget Sound. If measured ‘as the crow flies’ the island is 36 miles (58 km) long. Measuring the shore line from the extreme north to extreme south you’ll find it is 62 miles (100 km) long. It is 1.5 miles (2.4 km) wide at its narrowest point and 12 miles (19.3 km) at the widest. Its total are is 168.67 square miles (436.85 square km). The island was not fully explored until George Vancouver did it in 1792. Joseph Whidbey and Peter Puget began to explore and map the areas of Puget Sound. After circumnavigating the island, Vancouver named it after him. Make plans to explore the island, starting with TSH aero for your private air charter.

Economically, Whidbey Island is divided into two different regions. The northern end includes Oak Harbor and Whidbey Island Naval Air Station (NAS). The economy here is largely dependent on N.A.S. Whidbey, as they are the largest employer of Oak Harbor. Several national chain stores are located in the Oak Harbor area but it is a predominately service based economy. The rest of the island relies heavily on tourism, small scale agriculture and the arts. There are a wide range of amenities in the towns of Oak Harbor, Coupeville, Freeland and Langley to attract tourists. Highly renowned Penn Cove Mussels are exported in large quantities from Coupeville’s Penn Cove Mussel Farm. There are a number of small rural farms across the center of Whidbey Island. Numerous working artists, writers and performers live on Whidbey. They include painters, sculptors, glass artists, wood workers, metal workers, mixed media artists, photographers, authors, poets, actors and musicians. The Paine Field Boeing plant is located in Everett. Make your private jet flight arrangements now with TSH aero.

There are 6 state parks located on the island including Deception Pass State Park, which is the most visited state park in Washington. There are also several county operated parks around the island. During March and April, Gray whales and Orca can be seen from shore. No matter what the reason or season may be, be sure to let TSH aero secure your private charter.

CAF Restores B-17

Members of the Gulf Coast Wing of the Commemorative Air Force (CAF) have been working on the restoration of the B-17 ‘Texas Raiders’ for nearly seven and a half years. It was acquired by the CAF in 1967. The World War II plane spent most of its life in the humid Gulf Coast region allowing the salt air to produce a significant amount of corrosion. The plane also had defective wing spars and terminal end fittings that would have to be repaired, which was the push for the latest restoration.

Before work could begin, they had to find a fairly large hangar to house the plane while the work was being done. The size of the massive plane is daunting at best. Its wing span is 103 feet, 9.35 inches. The vertical stabilizer was measured at 19 feet, 2.44 inches. The group had a $250,000 growing fund to secure shelter for the bomber but those funds were consumed by the restoration. After that was gone the cost of rebuilding parts and fabricating parts was absorbed by the group. They also had to move the big plane twice as leases on temporary hangar space ran out. The wing pays $4,350 a month rent at Houston’s Hobby Airport and most of that comes from private donations.

The future hope of the group is to finish the cosmetic work, and return the B-17 to the air providing revenue rides. They estimate that the cost of each ride, several hundred dollars, will help the CAF pay the expenses. Wing officials are looking for a permanent home to house the B-17 as well as provide maintenance, supply storage and working space, along with a public welcoming space to process rides. The wish list includes a climate controlled museum big enough to exhibit the WW II artifacts that have been collected over the past 40 years. Currently, those items are being stored in members’ cedar closets and air conditioned storage spaces.

The G-model Flying Fortress returned to the skies on October 14 at the Houston Hobby Airport. They hope to begin a touring schedule, covering weekends with some mid-week static and flying tour stops. The pilots and ground crews are all volunteers. That’s a good thing since the estimated hourly cost to operate this plane is a whopping $2,500.

Visit the Barrier Islands, South Carolina

Starting south of Charleston, extending one hundred miles, all the way to Savannah, Georgia, the land remains only a few feet above sea level and has a border of sandy barrier islands. Tall cypress trees, oaks, and long leaf pines are denser along the coast. The rivers feeding into the inlets and the ocean are a dark tea color because of the tannic acid from the cypress and swamp roots. In this narrow strip of lowland, you can find plants like the large palmetto, dwarf palmetto, yucca, and ever green holly. Approaching the coast aboard a private charter jet through TSH aero you’ll get a good look at the barrier islands, the vegetation it produces and the salt marshes surrounding them.

Much of the interest in the Barrier Islands is centered around Capers Island State Heritage Preserve. It is one of the few undeveloped barrier islands. There are four beachfront state parks but Capers is the only primitive beachfront camping are in the state. The operative word here is primitive, as it has no facilities of any type. Campers are welcome, but warned to come prepared with all of the necessities, which should include water, food, shelter equipment, and a first aid kit. When you choose private air charter through TSH aero, space for equipment is not a concern. It will be treated with the same thoughtfulness as if you were loading it yourself.

An excellent place for surf fishing is the front beach of Capers Island. You’ll find bluefish, summer and winter trout and flounder besides spot-tail bass, aka channel bass, which are the surf angler’s tope prize. The size of the channel bass fish varies, but 30+ pound catches happen regularly. In the creeks that wind through the marsh, you’ll find game fish including trout, flounder, black drum, king whiting, pompano, spot and croaker as well as shrimp and crabs. A veritable feast, to cook over an open campfire, awaits the hardy angler. Fly private jet with TSH aero and you can arrive relaxed and ready to begin your adventure.

The area is teaming with birds. The brown pelican can be seen year round. In the cooler weather huge flocks of common surf and white winged scooters ride on the ocean just beyond the breakers. Loons and double crested cormorants are often sighted. Ducks such as mallard, teal, black duck, puddle ducks, widgeon, gadwalls, and pintails are the most abundant. Smaller shore birds often feed close by.

Yellowlegs, willets, and dunlins are a pretty common sight. The center portion of the front beach is pretty well covered with a tangle of fallen trees caused by the extensive beach erosion in that area. This is a particularly favorite destination for photographers. Don’t trust your equipment to the ‘care’ of the baggage handlers. Fly private with TSH aero and your equipment is handled and loaded with the utmost care.

If roughing it is not what you crave, there are larger cities along the coast including the two that flank South Carolina’s barrier islands, Charleston and Savannah, Georgia. Staying in a larger town affords you all the comforts of home while still affording you the opportunity to explore the area. Traveling on Route 17 from Charleston, you’ll see a part of the south that has changed little in the last 100 years. There are many reasons to visit the barrier islands area and just as many reasons to contact TSH aero to arrange your transportation to this rare area of the US.
